【Eclectic group of talented actors.】
Its not often that a couple of actors decide to write/produce/direct/star in their own feature film.
Even when that does occur, its not often that the results are much more than a self indulgent mess.
However, this is definitely not the case with "The Anniversary Party", an excellent film on all levels that, at this point, is clocking in as my favorite film of 2001 (but that's not really too difficult a feat considering the competition).
The two main talents in question are Jennifer Jason Leigh & Alan Cumming.!!
They play a married Hollywood couple who are hosting an intimate 6th anniversary party for themselves at their swanky yet cozy Hollywood hills house.
Joe (Cumming) is a writer who?s latest work has been green lighted to be made into a feature film.
As if that wasn?t enough, the studio's allowing Joe to direct it, and to cast the leads.
Since the script is clearly at least semi-biographical about himself and Sally (Leigh), everyone, including Sally, expect Joe to cast Sally in the role of?yep, you guessed it, Sally.
However, this is not the case.
Joe insists that his screenplay is "a novel", not his biography, and therefore has given the lead to young starlet Skye Davidson (Gwyneth Paltrow).
With just hours before the guests are slated to arrive, Sally discovers that Joe has invited Skye to their party, which of course enrages Sally and sets the tone for the rest of the film.
This drama with comedic overtones and a stellar cast were a joy to watch for two hours!! Moreover, when it was all said and done, I was happy to have been an observer of these people experiencing all they had to experience that night.
I felt privileged to be a 'fly on the wall' of their party.
Now, I miss them.
If I were the king of the world, I would consider this a contender for some awards.
I recommend seeing this with a friend or a lover, wives and hubby's included.
En-joy!!!!
